Missing Mama

This is a picture of my mother holding my baby boy, William James Bandy. Every Mother’s Day I think about my wonderful mother. I still miss her, but I know she’s in a better place, and I will see her again one day. I wrote this poem to honor her.

Missing Mama

My mama went to heaven to be with God one day.

I’m happy she’s in heaven. She’s in a better place.

I still really miss her more than words can ever say,

I know I’ll treasure memories of Mama, every day.

When I hear something special that Mama’d like to hear,

I grab the phone to call her, then remember she’s not there.

How I wish that I could hug her and rub her tired feet,

Play her favorite songs or make her something good to eat.

Now Mama is in heaven. She’ll be with God always.

I can’t reach out and touch her or see her face to face.

I cherish all my memories of times that we once shared.

I really miss my mama. Did she know how much I cared?

When I was young, she took us swimming clear across the lake.

She always cooked delicious food. She sure knew how to bake.

She cooked for kids at nearby schools and managed other cooks.

She was a whiz at numbers and knew how to keep the books.

She rocked her babies, wrote her poems, made crafts from “A” to “Z”.

She swam and fished and drove a boat. She sailed across the sea.

She liked to travel with my dad and with their boxers too.

She loved her family and her home. She loved friends old and new.

She loved my daddy dearly. She was proud to be his wife.

For almost sixty years, he was the love of mama’s life.

Her life here became painful…still she loved my daddy so.

She didn’t want to leave him, but it was time to go.

I think of Mama walking along those golden streets.

She’s not in pain. Her legs don’t ache, and she has brand new feet.

She doesn’t need to drag along the O2 tank to breathe,

And she has much more energy than we have ever seen.

She’s visiting her family and friends that got there first,

And seeing all the lovely things Jesus made for her.

She’s singing songs of worship to Jesus, face to face.

I’m happy she’s in heaven. She’s in a better place.

Yes, Mama went to heaven to be with God one day.

I’m happy she’s in heaven. She’s in a better place.

I’m thankful I’ll be with her again one glorious day.

‘Till then I’ll miss my mama more than words can ever say.

Thank you, Jeannie. It truly is a blessing to know that we’ll see our moms again one day.

  1. This is beautiful. I think of my mother who passed away in 2009 and would love to pick up the phone and talk. I miss her laughter and love of cooking and sharing recipes.

Thank you for sharing with us, Jo. I understand how you feel. (((HUGS))) Our mothers will always have a special place in our hearts.

  2. I remember your Mom well! We were blessed to grow up in a great neighborhood of wonderful Moms….they all took care of all of us:)

It was a wonderful place to grow up. I remember your mom as well. All of our moms watched out for us as we played with friends and explored the neighborhood. What great memories!

  3. A beautiful tribute to your mother, Esther. I still miss mine too, and she’s been gone since 1978. I relate to that picking up the phone thing. There were so many years when I thought, “I have to tell Mom.” It’s not as often anymore. Today, it’s more, “I wish I could tell Mom.” Somehow I think she already knows though.

    1. Thank you for your comment, Sharon. I always appreciate your kind words of encouragement. I’m sure we share many of the same thoughts and feelings about our moms, and I do think they already know how much we love them and miss them.

Mother’s Day was 10 days ago but I am reading this beautiful poem to our mother today and as far as I am concerned Mother’s Day for our mother is every day as long as I live. She was a beautiful, loving, compassionate and intelligent person and the best mother ever in my book.

    1. Melba,
Thank you for your wonderful response and your beautiful tribute to our mother. She was a beautiful person, and we were truly blessed to have her. We continue to be blessed by the memories we share with each other.

  5. Beautiful poem Esther: I have never met you in person or your mom. My precious mom went to be with Jesus last April. Your poem touches tender spots in my memories of my own mother. Someday we will get to hug our mommas in heaven again. Maybe we will get to meet and introduce our mothers in heaven too. God Bless you,
